Dr. Jodness Tan, the Chief Executive Officer of HWT Group Berhad, was born in October 31, 1991 and is a Malaysian Chinese. Since 2010, he built the company and has been working with his family as CEO, leading the company to develop from the traditional media publishing industry to the present industry. The scope of business includes new media, finance, corporate certification, brand activation, logistic, product production, event planning, commercial photography, technology application development, and business school, all over Malaysia, Singapore, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, Nepal, and Japan. His personal investment projects include kindergartens, high-end barber shop, and a number of well-known Malaysian e-commerce brands.

He became Asia’s youngest chief editor when he started his career at the age of 19 in 2010, and his 20th birthday was presided over by the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia in 2011, and at the age of 21, he was featured on the cover of the Educational Column of Oriental Daily, a famous Malaysian newspaper in 2012. In 2013, at the age of 22, he started a number of companies and invested in multiple businesses, and in 2014, at the age of 23, he was invited to be the keynote speaker of the Global Outstanding Youth Community of the World Economic Forum in 2014, was awarded the honour of Dato’ for recognizing his achievements in the aspects of promoting the revival of the media and the early childhood education industry and youth entrepreneurship. In 2015, at the age of 24, he gained the degree of Doctor of Business Administration at the Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At the same year, he married his wife who has the exactly same birthday as him and this event topped on the headlines of major media. The unconventional second-generation rich kid
此富二代非彼富二代
Many people might believe that a person who can have this achievement at this age must be a “super second-generation rich kid”. This kind of so-called legend is usually the convention of idol drama. But his miracle is indeed true. He started with bare hands and gained the achievement with his family. He told the editor that, although his family had been the publisher of Malaysia’s best-selling commercial magazine for nearly 20 years and had successfully opened a series of business awards in Malaysia, he was not a second-generation rich kid. Because his father was actually working for the uncles in the past, the achievements and most of the wealth were not belonging to his father. But he also stressed that, in fact,he never tabooed to be misunderstood as “a second-generation rich kid.”If the identity of the “second-generation rich kid” needs to be emphasized, he hopes that people can better understand the meaning of such label for him. For him, “a second-generation rich kid”means “a second-generation kid with rich interpersonal relations” rather than “possessingrich money”. Although he and his father started their career with bare hands, he is really impossible to have such a rapid development in the absence of his father’s nearly 30 years of experiences and interpersonal relations in this industry. He used his ability to prove himself and effectively inherited the interpersonal relations and converted them into money-earning relations. There’s no other choice but to start a business
别无选择唯有创业
Jodness Tan told us that his original dream was to be a rock star and never thought of starting a business. But at his age of 19, his father’s start-up company soon suffered a collective betrayal of shareholders, and all of his father’s savings vanished in a flash. He said that it was his first time to see how sad his father was and how many people at that time changed their attitudes towards his father. He intended to do something, but felt that he had nothing to do and also needed to worry about the next meal. Due to that situation, he took the initiative to sit down discuss it with his parents for the first time. And they decided to start again and publish a completely new book titled “Ai Beauty.”
陈景豪告诉我们，自己曾经的梦想是成为一名摇滚巨星，压根就没想过创业。但也就在他19岁那年，他父亲初创公司不久，就遭遇了股东的背叛，投入的全部积蓄在瞬间烟消云散。他说那是自己第一次看到父亲难过的情绪，也看到很多人在那个时候对父亲的种种态度转变，心里想要做些什么，却什么也做不了，下一餐也犯愁了。于是在那个时候，他第一次主动和父母坐下来探讨家事。而他们就此决定重新来过，出版第一本名为《爱美丽》的杂志。
He told the editor that, although he had worked for his father’s fledgling company for a while, he still had no idea how an enterprise runs and how to publish a magazine. Although his father has been working in this industry, all his father knows is about sales rather than magazine editing, publishing work and business operations. But he knew that the family had no other choice, so he opened the video site to learn graphic designs, read someone else’s magazines to refer to how to write a variety of copywriting. Every morning, he still needed to go to school, and occasionally needed to go out to do some sales work. He said, when there was no way to retreat, his potential was inspired and released. Without any venture capital or any office, he just needed to open a computer at home, and went out to give customers an advertising price list. He worked so hard every day and night and witnessed the sunrises and sunsets for years, until today he actually has its own office and his company has become the industry’s pilot-level enterprise. His family, he says, have always thanked those entrepreneurs who chose to believe in and support his family and help them to get through when they had nothing, and have always thanked those who had chosen to stay away from them at that time because the family’s moves were more smooth and decisive due to the latter’s abandonment.
他告诉编辑，虽然自己也曾在父亲当时初创不久的公司上班，但是自己完全不知道企业是如何运作的，也不知道如何出版一本杂志。父亲虽然一直在这个行业，但也只是能够做销售，对于杂志编辑和出版工作和企业运营是一窍不通。但是他知道一家人也没有别的选择，于是打开了视频网站学习平面设计、拿着别人的杂志来参考如何撰写各种文案、每天早上还要去上学、时不时也出去做销售工作。他说，无路可退的时候，潜能就被逼出来了。不需要创业资本不需要办公室，就是在家打开一台电脑，出门呈上一张广告价钱表，每日每夜努力工作，看尽几年的日出和日落，直到今天拥有自己的写字楼，成为行业中的领航级企业。他表示，他们一家人都始终非常感谢当初那些在他们一无所有时，依然选择相信和支持他们家的企业家朋友，促使他们能够走起来；也感谢在那个时候选择远离他们的人们，让他们走在路上时更加顺畅。

He said entrepreneurship is really not difficult, and you do not need to have any preparation. As long as you decide to cut off all means of retreat and are willing to spend all the time on the career, you can try to start a business. Because when you have no way of retreat, you can only choose to move forward and there is no obstacle that can prevent you from moving forward, and you’ll finally find a way to solve your problem and won the success. When he was asked about what’s his opinion on those shareholders who betrayed his father, he smiled and said, “I used to have some mundane or irrational ideas, but when I was able to practice these ideas, I suddenly realized I had a lot of important things to do. 他表示，创业其实真的不难，而且你也不需要有任何准备，只要准备好不给自己留后路，以及愿意将所有时间用在事业上的心态， 就可以去创业了。因为当人无法后退的时候，就只能选择前进，所以任何阻碍都无法阻止这个人前进，任何问题都会想出办法解决直到成功。当被问及如今如何看待那些背叛父亲的股东时，他微笑地说道，“我也曾有一些比较俗的想法，但是能够实践这些想法时，才发现自己还有很多重要的事情要做。既然父亲也释怀了，那就好了。况且，我们一家要不是因为这件事情，也不可一起创业并且拥有今天的一切。”
The meaning of success is not just about the career
成功的意义不只是事业
“Phenomena investigation, knowledge acquisition, sincerity, positive attitude, self-cultivation, regulating the family, and ruling the country and the world.” These are phrases that Jodness Tan sticks them to his office computer. He told us that these phrases are from the book of The Great Learning of Book of Ritesthat he read every morning when he was fortunate to participate in the President’s class at Tsinghua University as a media practitioner at the age of 20. He realized the way to great success from these phrases, so he posted them on his computer to remind himself every morning to not get lost all the time.
As for success, he has his own view. The perfection in family, love, friendship, career and health overall constitutes a big success. He also served the role of editor and journalist and interviewed a lot of entrepreneurs, and learned many cases of family alienation, love infidelity, indiscriminate friendship, poor health and so on. He didn’t want to live like that and to have nothing but money. So, he succeeds in moving towards the ideals he understands. He had a timetable on his wall, clearly stating his time allocation on family, love, friendship, career, and health within a week.
“格物、致知、诚意、正心、修身、齐家、治国、平天下”这是陈景豪贴在自己办公电脑上的大字。他告诉我们，这是自己在20岁的时候有幸因媒体身份而参与到清华大学总裁班上课时，在每日早读《礼记.大学》中读到的，也因此让他领悟到了走向大成功的方法，所以他就贴在电脑前，每天提醒自己，无时无刻都不要迷失。
对于成功，他是这么认为的。亲情、爱情、友情、事业、及健康都好，这才是大成功。他也曾担当编辑和记者的身份，采访过很多的企业家，而其中不乏家庭疏远、爱情泛滥、友情混乱、健康欠佳等的案例。他不希望自己也活成那样，穷的只剩下钱。因此他朝着自己所理解的理想成功去活着。而他墙上就贴着一个时间表，明确的写明了他一周内，分配在亲情、爱情、友情、事业、及健康上的时间。
In terms of family bond, their family has used the time and results to prove the truth that a peaceful family will prosper. Jodness Tan believes that the most important thing among family members is mutual respect, understanding and trust, and never giving up any family member anyway. In terms of love, he married his wife with the exactly same birthday as him, Datin Yen Wei, his primary schoolmate. They fell in love with each other at the age of 21 and gained everything with bare hands. His first personal business was inspired by his wife’s dream of childhood education and a teacher’s advices, so he invested in the preschool education industry and set up the Shambala Kidz Leadership Preschool. They’ve devoted themselves to education together, and also set up a foundation to support the disadvantaged groups in society, and they’ve become a model couple in the eyes of people. Their famous wedding in 2016 was reported by several international media. He told the editor that, before he was with his wife, he was blindly immersed in his business, but his wife pulled him out of the mud, changed his personality and working style, so that he could climb to a higher peak with sustainable energy.
在爱情上，他和同年同月同日生的妻子–曾艳蔚是小学同学，两人21岁时在一起，从无到有一起走过。他的第一项个人业务，也是因为妻子的幼教梦和自己也曾因受一名老师所开导而改变，所以投入了幼教行业，成立了香巴拉幼儿领袖学院。他们一同为教育付出，也成立基金会资助社会弱势群体，是人们眼中的模范情侣。2016年，他们的世纪婚礼更被多家国际媒体报导。他告诉编辑，在还没与妻子在一起之前，每天都是盲目的深陷在创业中，是妻子将他从泥泞中拉出来，改变了他的个性和工作方式，让他能够攀向更高峰。
In terms of friendship, when we access his circle of friends, we will know that he has a vast and solid social network. He said he believes in fate, as long as he has an intersection with other side and thinks the other side is a good person, he will take the initiative to talk to each other to make friends. He’s learned a lot from this habit and gained a number of resources. He’s good at making friends everywhere and in any class. He also admitted that because he can do anything for a friend, he’s borne a lot of losses. But he believed that all this is a kind of test which the God gives him, so that he can early experience it and learn something.
In health, he is a person who insists on exercising every two days. A height of 181cm, a charming face, bright eyes, warm palms, and loud voices remind us that he does not neglect his health because of work. And he told us, when starting his business, every day he worked for nearly 20 hours, also suspended the Taekwondo training that he has exercised for 7 years. His health situation was severe, and even showed a sign of hemiplegia, so he decided to change the way of working, and therefore found that the extra working hours didn’t make his career better. Without a healthy physique, even if he succeeded one day, he would have no chance to enjoy it.
在友情上，我们打开他的朋友圈就知道他的人脉广大且扎实。他说自己相信缘分，只要遇上了，觉得对方是个不错的人，就会主动和对方交谈成为朋友，也从中学习更多掌握更多。所以在哪里都有朋友，而且什么阶层的朋友都有。他也坦言，因为自己能够为朋友两肋插刀的性格，所以也吃过很多的亏。但是他相信这一切都是上天给予他的历练，能够提早经历就能提早预防。
在健康上，他是一个坚持每两天运动一次的人。181的身高、红润的脸、明亮的眼神、温暖的手心、及宏亮的声音，确实没有因工作而忽略健康。而他则告诉我们，创业的时候，每天都是工作将近20个小时，也停止了维持7年的跆拳道训练，身体状况一度亮红灯，甚至有半边中风的征兆，促使他决定改变工作方式，也因此发现原来工作得多，不一定工作得好。没有健康的体魄，即使有天成功了，也没机会享福了。
In career, he said he and the company are still very inconspicuous, and he’s still unsatisfactory when compared to his final goal. The achievements that HWT Group gained today for him are a kind of groundwork. Under his leadership in 2017, the industrial chain was well laid out and began to run. He is also confident that, in the next 10 years he will lead the company to develop towards a higher peak. He has also been emphasizing that he started his business with his family, which is different from many people who always want to prove themselves in independence of their parents or family. He told us that he believed that it was a great honor to start a business with his family and to work together with them, because only a few families can do it. Moreover, he believed that if only the founder of a company gains fame and fortune, that is not a multi-win-win cooperation. In his company, fame and fortune are given to the staffs who deserve it. So, it is not difficult to find that their management leaders are all famous and respected.
在事业上，他说自己和公司都仍是非常渺小的，距离目标也还有十万八千里。豪威国际集团发展至今，对他而言只是刚刚把地基做好。2017年在他的领导下，产业链已布局完善，并且开始转动运作。他也有信心在接下来的10年，带领公司迈向更高峰。他也一直强调，自己是和家人共同创业，这有别于很多人总是希望脱离父辈或家人的影子。他告诉我们自己是这么认为的，和家人共同创业并且一直在一起是一种荣耀，因为没有多少个家庭能够做到。而且，一个公司里只有一个人名利双收，那就不叫共赢。在他们公司，名利是给予所有付出的人的，所以你不难发现他们的管理层领导，都是被人熟知和尊重的。
In terms of personal investment, he said that if he had met the right person, he would invest on the latter rather than choosing to invest in a popular industry. He also set up the 108 Entrepreneurs Academy to invites scholars and experienced entrepreneur friends, so as to together with him cultivate some outstanding entrepreneurs and leaders and provide guidance to those starters without any resources or any experience but with a willing to focus on the cause and to struggle until the success.
而在个人投资方面，他则表示自己只要遇到了对的人，就会投入下去，而不是选择投入某个风口上的行业。他也特别成立了壹佰单捌星企业家商学院，诚邀学者及实战企业家朋友，与他共同培养优秀创业者及领导人物，以此帮助那些像自己当初，什么都不会什么都没有，只有一颗愿意专注为事业去奋斗直到成功的人。
The responsibility of an entrepreneur

Jack Ma, an internationally renowned entrepreneur, has divided figures in the business circle into three categories: (a) entrepreneurs who are socially responsible and (b) businessmen who have their lower limits and (c) profiteers who are purely profit-oriented. And Jodness’s behavior is fully in line with the title of entrepreneur.
国际著名企业家马云，曾将商场人物分为三类：（一）企业家是对社会有责任的，（二）商人是有所为有所不为的，（三）生意人是唯利是图的。而陈景豪的所作所为，完全符合了企业家的称号。
In an interview, he introduced the Shambala Kidz Leadership Preschool, a social-service-type enterprise created by himself and his wife to the editor. The core objective of its establishment is to include the elements of leadership into preschool education, in order to master the quality of leadership in one’s best learning period and to cultivate more excellent leaders for the society. It is generally known that the most important quality of a leader is “responsibility”. He believes that the amount of responsibility a person has to bear is decided by how much he has achieved. One must be responsible for himself first and be able to protect and strengthen himself first, then can be responsible for all who he loves or cares him, and finally can be responsible for the society when the ability is bigger or the wealth is more. He told the editor that he was shouldering all the responsibilities that he could take on his shoulders. He also sighed that he might not be unable or have no ability to change the world in his lifetime like some great characters, but he hopes that, through education, he might be able to cultivate a group of talents who are likely to change the world and via them the spirit of Shambala Kidz may be presented to the world.

Today’s Jodness Tan has begun to be responsible for society in practice. As a media company, Jodness said, all the staffs were earlier aware of their social responsibilities. Responsibility is a very funny thing, you can say that it has nothing to do with you, but it actually has a connection to everyone. In particular, an enterprise’s success is unable to be independent of the society, so it needs to adhere to the spirit of what is taken from the society should be used for the interests of the society.

What advice do you have for young people who are just starting a business?
对于刚创业的青年，有什么建议？
When being asked about such a question, Jodness Tan immediately said that he was still in his own entrepreneurial stage and was not qualified to give an advice to anyone, so maybe sharing is a more appropriate word. He said that when he was a 19-year-old entrepreneur, many veterans looked down on young lads, or insulted and belittled him. After getting some achievements, the attitude of others has changed, and he’s become accustomed to listening some compliments like “young and promising” from others every day. With the attention of people and peers, troubles and defamations also followed. And in the face of this kind of people and unfair comments that he’s bound to meet in the entrepreneurial process, he also has his own countermeasures. In the face of contempt and insult, he chose to endure the humiliation and work hard; in the face of other people’s praises, he chose to thank them and continue to keep his nose; in the face of troubles and defamations, he chose to ignore and still continue to work hard. Jodness Tan said, an entrepreneur’s job is to work hard until it reaches the ideal situation in his mind. Don’t be affected by any negative energy, and don’t get lost in applauses. You must remember to keep low profile and have the courage, and also need to show your confidence if necessary. Calm mind makes you wise, clear thoughts make you insightful.
陈景豪在被问及这个问题时，立即表示仍定位自己在创业中，没资格给任何人建议，用分享的方式更为恰当。他说，自己19岁创业的时候，成年人都看不起年轻小伙子，甚至还被侮辱和贬低过；有了一些成就后，别人态度又转变了，“年轻有为“这四个字每天都要听几遍；得到人们和同行的关注了，是非和诽谤也随之而来。而面对这些创业中一定会遇到的人事物，他也有自己的一套。面对看不起和侮辱，他选择忍辱负重，埋头苦干；面对别人的赞扬，他选择感谢对方，继续埋头苦干；面对是非和诽谤，他选择一笑而过，仍然继续埋头苦干。陈景豪是这么说的，一个创业者的工作就是埋头苦干，直至达到心中的理想的境地。不要被任何负能量影响了自己，也不要迷失在掌声之中。一定要记得低头有骨气，抬头有底气；心静则清，心清则明。
